Want to FIRE? Avoid the crowds
Why retiring early means escaping everyone else's expensive timeline
Last week, I announced my new project exploring "off-peak living" - structuring your life to avoid the crowded, expensive peak times that society defaults to. The project is in full swing, and over the next few weeks, I'll share teasers of my thinking here.
The FIRE Connection
Off-peak living is intimately connected to FIRE in two powerful ways. First, off-peak strategies help you save more money while often improving your quality of life, accelerating your journey to financial independence. Second, once you've achieved FIRE, off-peak living becomes your secret weapon for maintaining a minimal cost of living while maximizing experiences and freedom.
My Framework: The Whole-Life Off-Peak Approach
To explore off-peak living in a structured way, let's look at the main categories of human life: Community & Place (housing, relationships, social connections), Work & Career (employment, income generation, professional development), Health & Wellness (healthcare, fitness, nutrition, mental health), Growth & Learning (education, skills, personal development), Travel & Experiences (exploration, recreation, entertainment), and Daily Operations (transportation, shopping, technology, finances).
For each category, I'll evaluate off-peak strategies through three return metrics: Financial Return (direct cost savings and investment opportunities), Time Return (efficiency gains and reduced friction), and Emotional Return (improved happiness, reduced stress, enhanced experiences). Over the next few weeks, I will reflect on powerful real-life stories of off-peak travel as they relate to the FIRE journey.
Category Spotlight: Travel & Experiences
Off-peak travel delivers 30-50% cost savings on flights, hotels, and activities with fewer crowds and reduced stress. Tuesday-Wednesday departures typically offer the cheapest fares, and shoulder seasons provide better weather with fewer tourists. I have been to most vacation islands from Bora Bora to Maldives and always do so in the shoulder season.
So how to travel off-peak? Here are a few ideas off the top of my head.
